Sermon, March 13, 2011 - The Cross Today

Romans 3.27 - 31

What does the Cross of Christ mean for us today?

A. NO BOASTING [27-28]

1. People boast [1.30]

2. Jews boast about being Jews [2.17]

3. Paul boasted about being a Jew [Phil 3.4-6]

4. The early church wrongly boasted in people [1 Cor 1.12]

B. NO DISCRIMINATION [29-30]

1. People discriminate

2. Jews and Gentiles discriminated [Acts 15.1]

3. The early church wrongly discriminated [1 Cor 1.10-12]

One Lord [1 Cor 1.2]
One Table [1 Cor 10.1-4, 16-17]
One Body [1 Cor 12.12-13]

C. NO LAWLESSNESS [31]

Obeying the law of God will not put us
in a right relationship with God [Rom 3.20].
But the law of God remains useful:

1. The law is used to restrain sin

2. The law is used to redirect our behavior

3. The law is used to reveal our need of Christ

Quotes of note...

No heart can conceive that treasury of mercies which lies in this one privilege, in having liberty and ability to approach unto God at all times, according to His mind and will.
