Sermon, August 30, 2009 - Why Give Myself to God? Part 1

Romans 12.1 Why Give Myself to God? Part 1

What we are to do:

1. Give ourselves to God [present yourselves
to God…]
2. Give all that we are to God [present your
bodies…]
3. Give all that we are to God in all of life
[Rom 12-16]

Why? “…therefore…”

A. BELIEF AND BEHAVIOR

1. Paul always keeps our beliefs and our
behavior together

Rom 6.12; 1 Cor 10.14; 15.58; Gal 5.1;
Eph 4.1; Phil 2.12; Col 2.6; 3.5

2. We need to keep our beliefs and our
behavior together

A doctrine, a gospel, which has no
significance for man’s life and conduct
is not a real gospel [Anders
Nygren].

B. WHAT ARE WE TO BELIEVE?

1. We’re in trouble [1.18; 2.1; 3.10-12,
19-20]

2. God took the initiative to make things
right [5.8]

3. Now things are different [8.1-2, 32]

4. The door of hope is still open for all who
will believe [9.6; 10.4, 9]

C. WHAT IS TO BE OUR BEHAVIOR?

1. The chief end of man is to glorify and
enjoy God [1 Cor 10.31]

2. The Word of God is the only rule to direct
us how we are to glorify and enjoy God [2 Tim 3.16]

3. The Bible primarily teaches what we are to
believe and do

Quotes of note...

We Christians must simplify our lives or lose untold treasures on earth and in eternity. Modern civilization is so complex as to make the devotional life all but impossible. The need for solitude and quietness was never greater than it is today.
