Sermon, August 16, 2009 - Come, Lord Jesus

Revelation 22.6-20 Come, Lord Jesus

One reason for the absence of real yearning for
Christ’s return
is that Christians are so comfortable in this world
that they have little desire to leave it. [AW Tozer]

The book of Revelation closes with a reminder of
some major themes:

A. THE WORD OF GOD

[22.6, 7, 9, 10, 18-19]

The book began with a blessing for those who
would follow this study [1.3]

B. THE LIFE OF GOD

[20.4-5; 12, 15; 21.6, 27; 22.1-2, 14, 17,
19]

The Bible begins and ends with an emphasis on
life.

C. THE RETURN OF THE SON OF GOD [22.7, 12, 20]

1. Who is coming? [13, 15]

2. What will His coming be like?

a. Personal [Acts 1.11]

b. Visible [Rev 1.7]

c. Glorious [Titus 2.11-13]

3. How should we then live?

a. Since Jesus is coming back, let’s live
a godly life

b. Since Jesus is coming back, let’s be
active working in this world

If you read history you will find that the
Christians who did most for the present world were
just those who thought most of the next. [CS Lewis]

c. Since Jesus is coming back, let’s find
comfort in the midst of our suffering

Quotes of note...

Faith is the acknowledgment of the entire absence of all goodness in us, and the recognition of the cross as the substitute for all the want on our part. The whole work is His, not ours, from first to last.
