Sermon, October 5, 2008, Revelation 3.1-6 The One Who Has the Spirit of Life

Revelation 3.1-6 The One Who Has the Spirit of Life

…you have a name that you are alive, but you are dead.

A. THE PROBLEM OF SPIRITUAL DROWSINESS

A weakening of faith, a cooling of love, a lessening of zeal,
an abatement of that whole hearted devotedness to Christ
which marks the healthy saint. [AW Pink]

1. A physical drowsiness

2. A deadness of will

3. A deadness of feeling

4. A deadness of all that is lovely

5. A deadness in the midst of busyness

B. THE SOLUTION TO THE PROBLEM

1. Repent

a. Wake up

b. Strengthen the things that remain

c. Remember what you have received and heard and keep it [1 Cor 15.1-4]

2. Believe

a. Believe in the person of Jesus [1; 1.4, 20]

b. Believe in the promise of Jesus for white garments [5a]

1 Cor 6.11; Eph 5.26; Tit 3.5-6; Heb 10.22; Rev 7.14

c. Believe in the promise of Jesus about your name [5b]

God don’t make no promises that He don’t keep
You got some big dreams, but in order to dream you gotta still be asleep.
There’s a Man up on a cross and He’s been crucified for you
Believe in His power, that’s about all you got to do. [Bob Dylan]

Quotes of note...

None but the Lord himself can afford us any help from the awful workings of unbelief, doubtings, carnal fears, murmurings. Thank God one day we will be done forever with "unbelief."
