Sermon, July 13, 2008, John 3.22-36 Who is Jesus? The Bridegroom

John 3.22-36 Who is Jesus? The Bridegroom

We learn about who Jesus is and how we’re to follow Him
from comments made by John the Baptist.

A. WHO WAS JOHN THE BAPTIST?

1. A man sent from God [1.6-8]

2. A man who got people’s attention

3. A man who got the attention of the religious leaders

4. A man who always pointed others to Jesus [1.23, 29, 35-37]

5. A man who understood his own place in God’s plan [1.32, 34]

6. A man who was hard at work doing God’s will [3.22ff]

B. WHAT CAN WE LEARN FROM HIM?

1. Live in the consciousness of God’s grace [27]

A man can receive nothing
unless it has been given him from heaven.

2. Live with a clear sense of God’s plan and purpose for your life [28]

You yourselves are my witnesses that I said, ‘I am not the Christ,’
but, ‘I have been sent ahead of Him.’

3. Live a life characterized by real joy in serving Christ [29]

He who has the bride is the bridegroom;
&nbs p; but the friend of the bridegroom, who stands and hears him,
rejoices greatly because of the bridegroom’s voice.
So this joy of mine has been made full.

4. Live a life permeated with an attitude of genuine humility [30]

…I must decrease.

5. Live a life with the constant aim of glorifying Jesus Christ [30]

He must increase…

Quotes of note...

Wilberforce, Lord Shaftesbury, and many other evangelicals, have been leaders in social reform, but it was not their religion. Their efforts succeeded because they put first things first, and believed firmly in the Word of God, in the conversion of the individual, in prayer, and in using spiritual means for spiritual work.
