Hebrews 12.4-13 The Discipline of the Lord: Our Response

Run the race with endurance
Resist sin
Remember that God loves you
Realize that

God is DOING SOMETHING
GOD is doing something
God is doing something FOR YOUR GOOD

Respond in such a way as to benefit from the Lord’s discipline.

A. DO NOT MAKE LIGHT OF IT [5a]

1. Don’t just endure it stoically
2. Don’t remove God from the picture
3. Don’t dismiss it as bad luck

B. DO NOT LOSE HEART [5b]

1. Don’t wallow in self pity
2. Don’t become resentful
3. Don’t get depressed
4. Don’t begin to doubt your salvation
5. Don’t doubt God’s love

C. DO NOT GIVE UP [12-13]

1. Live by faith [10.38; 11.1-40]
2. Be patient [Jam 5.10-11; Heb 6.11-12]
3. Develop an attitude of gratitude [13.15]
4. Encourage others [12; 10.23-25]

Quotes of note...

O Lord our God, grant us grace to desire Thee with our whole heart; that, so desiring, we may seek, and seeking find Thee; and so finding Thee may love Thee; and loving Thee, may hate those sins from which Thou hast redeemed us.
St. Anselm
