Sermon, March 9, 2008, Hebrews 11.17-19 The Obedience of Faith

Hebrews 11.17-19 The Obedience of Faith

God calls us to trust AND obey.

The Scriptures principally teach
what we are to believe concerning God
and what duty God requires of us.

Abraham illustrates how we are to both trust AND obey.

1. By faith, Abraham, when he was tested…

a. God loved Abraham

b. God tested Abraham

2. By faith…he offered up Isaac…

3. By faith…

What kind of faith will enable me to obey?

A. FAITH IN GOD’S LOVE

1. God had loved, chosen and called Abraham [Phil 1.6]

2. God’s test was evidence of God’s love [12.6]

3. God was prepared to do
what He was calling Abraham to do [John 3.16; Rom 8.32]

B. FAITH IN GOD’S FAITHFULNESS

1. The Lord will provide

2. God will supply all your needs… [Phil 4.19]

3. He who promised is faithful [10.23]

C. FAITH IN GOD’S ABILITY

1. God’s command

2. God’s promise

3. The solution: the obedience of faith [19]

Quotes of note...

That you cannot have Christian principles without Christ is becoming increasingly clear [in the world today], because their validity as principles depends on Christ's authority.
