Sermon November 25, 2007 Titus 1.10-16 Protecting the Generation to Come

Titus 1.10-16 Protecting the Generation to Come

Who in our world today would you consider to be a false teacher? [think about it!]

God wants us to develop leadership
that will be able to protect the generation to come.

A. FALSE TEACHERS: A GENERAL DESCRIPTION [10]

1. They don’t listen to what God says

2. Their talk doesn’t lead you to God

3. Their talk leads you astray

4. There are many of them!

B. FALSE TEACHERS ARE BAD [11-13]

1. They have a bad influence on people: upsetting families

2. They have bad motives: dishonest gain

3. They have a bad character: liars, brutes, gluttons

C. FALSE TEACHERS ARE WRONG

1. They have a wrong understanding of authority [14]

Word of God…or commandments of men?

2. They have a wrong understanding of purity [15]

Purity of heart…or conformity to rules?

3. They have a wrong understanding of knowledge [16]

Godly character…or mere head knowledge?

When false teachers increase, the most appropriate long term strategy is
to multiply the number of true teachers
who are equipped to rebut and refute error. [John Stott].

Quotes of note...

Let the seeking man reach a place where life and lips join to say continually, "Be thou exalted," and a thousand minor problems will be solved at once. His Christian life ceases to be the complicated thing it had been before and becomes the very essence of simplicity.
