General principles
1. Elders have spiritual oversight in the local church
2. There is to be a plurality of elders
3. The primary function of elders is to teach God’s Word
4. The selection of elders is the responsibility of the congregation
5. The elder is responsible only to God

What kind of men do we want to lead the generation to come?

A. LOOK AT THE MAN’S FAMILY LIFE [6]

1. Faithful to his wife

2. Faithful children

B. LOOK AT THE MAN’S PERSONAL CHARACTER

1. What is NOT to be true of him [7]

a. arrogant
b. angry
c. uncontrollable
d. violent
e. greedy

2. What IS to be true of him [8]

C. LOOK AT THE MAN’S DOCTRINE [9]

1. He must know and believe the historic doctrines of the Christian faith

a. The faithful Word: The Bible

b. THE teaching: The doctrine of the Bible

2. He must know what to do with what He knows and believes

a. Able to pass on the truth to the generation to come

b. Able to expose those who threaten the generation to come

A pastor needs two voices, one for gathering the sheep
and the other for driving away wolves and thieves [John Calvin].
