Sermon June 10, 2007 Mark 12.41-44 All She Had

Mark 12.41-44 All She Had

The temple.
Thirteen collection boxes.
Many rich people putting in large sums.
A poor widow came and put in two small copper coins, which amount to a cent.
Calling his disciples….Look at this!

    A. GIVING IS AN EXPRESSION OF OUR FAITH

When we give we express our belief that God really is going to take care of us.

    B. GIVING IS AN EXPRESSION OF OUR DEVOTION

When we give we express what is most important to us.

I do not believe one can settle how much we ought to give. I am afraid the only safe rule is to give more than we can spare [CS Lewis].

    C. GIVING IS AN EXPRESSION OF OUR LOVE

There are three kinds of giving: grudge giving, duty giving, and thanks giving. Grudge giving says, I have to; duty giving says, I ought to; thanksgiving says, I want to [Donald Whitney].

Quotes of note...

Wilberforce, Lord Shaftesbury, and many other evangelicals, have been leaders in social reform, but it was not their religion. Their efforts succeeded because they put first things first, and believed firmly in the Word of God, in the conversion of the individual, in prayer, and in using spiritual means for spiritual work.
