Sermon May 20, 2007 Hebrews 6.4-8 Press On To Maturity: A Warning
Hebrews 6.4-8 Press On To Maturity: A Warning
-
1. Christians are to press on to maturity [1]
2. ALL Christians are responsible to become spiritually mature [3]
3. The danger of apostasy is one reason why we are to press on [4-8]
4. This warning is a hard saying for all of us to hear [9b]
5. There is good reason to believe that we have not committed the sin described here [9a]
A. A PERSON MIGHT EXPERIENCE MANY GOOD THINGS
1. Understanding the Word of God [4a]
a. Once enlightened
b. Tasted of the heavenly gift
c. Yet…Mark 4.3-17
2. Sharing in some work of the Spirit of God [4b]
-
a. Partaker of the Holy Spirit
b. Yet…Matthew 7.21-23
3. Experiencing something of the promises of God [5]
a. Tasted the good Word of God and the powers of the age to come
b. Yet…Luke 6.38
B. FALLING AWAY
- …an open, total, determined renunciation of all the principles of Christianity [John Brown]
1. Fall away…NOT…fall into sin
2. Fall AWAY: Apostasy
3. Impossible to be brought back
a. There’s nothing more that we can say or do
b. Yet…this is not impossible with God
4. An illustration [7-8]
C. SOME CONCLUSIONS
1. Hebrews 6 does not prohibit us as a church from receiving ANYONE into our fellowship upon a profession of faith in Christ and showing evidence of repentance
2. Hebrews 6 does not stand in the way of ANYONE who wants to come to Christ
3. Hebrews 6 is not written to scare true Christians into doubting their salvation
4. Hebrews 6 does not teach anything that might undermine the biblical doctrine of the perseverance of the saints
