Sermon May 6, 2007 Hebrews 5.11-6.3 How to Press on to Maturity

Hebrews 5.11-6.3 How to Press on to Maturity

The problem of immaturity: becoming dull [5.11-14]

A definition of maturity: discernment [5.14]

An illustration of maturity: making right choices [11.24-27]

The pursuit of maturity: pressing on [6.1-3]

How do I press on so as to become spiritually mature?

1. Daily meditate upon the Word of God [4.12]

Do I have a plan for regular, systematic reading of the Scriptures?

2. Daily live in the fear of God [4.13]

Do I make choices in life knowing that God knows everything I’m thinking?

3. Daily live by faith in the Son of God [4.14-15]

Am I consciously drawing spiritual strength from my Savior Jesus Christ?

4. Daily go before the throne of God [4.16]

Do I spend time each day in prayer with Jesus?

5. Daily live a life of obedience to God [5.8-9]

Is it becoming easier or harder to say YES to God’s will?

6. Daily be active in the ministry of God [6.10]

Do I live more for myself or for others?

7. Daily embrace the promises of God [6.11-12]

Am I anticipating bad things or good things to happen to me?

Quotes of note...

Wilberforce, Lord Shaftesbury, and many other evangelicals, have been leaders in social reform, but it was not their religion. Their efforts succeeded because they put first things first, and believed firmly in the Word of God, in the conversion of the individual, in prayer, and in using spiritual means for spiritual work.
