FAMILY SUNDAY SCHOOL CLASS
On March 4, 2007 we will once again have our Family Sunday School class in the church sanctuary. Everyone (young, old, and in-between) will meet together for a special lesson. We will be returning to the topic of church music to learn more about instrumental music in worship from long ago and today. We will learn about ancient instruments used by the priests in the tabernacle/temple, form an orchestra of our own and play music together, and take a tour of the organ and piano. Mark your calendars and plan to be present with your whole family. You don’t want to miss it!
At our last Family Sunday School class we talked about the importance of singing and vocal music. We learned several things about singing…
1. Singing is commanded by God.
2. Singing is used as a way to speak to God in prayer and about God in praise.
3. Singing is a very important part of worship and should be practiced by everyone.
4. Singing can be practiced a capella, with recorded music, and with accompanying instruments. There are proper times and places for all of these methods.
To help you practice your singing, there are several resource available from music/book publishers. These resources are also available for borrowing from our church library.
1. Kings and Queens for God by Carol Greene is a great book about Christian character and includes a story about Charlemagne, the king that loved church music and singing.
2. Psalms, Hymns, and Spiritual Songs, Vol. 1 (Book and Sing-along CD) by Great Commission Publications is a terrific way to learn hymn histories and practice singing as a family with recorded orchestral accompaniment. You can listen to samples from this recording at GCP’s website, which is http://www.gcp.org/musicclips.asp?cd=psalms1&id=987782927
3. Psalms of the Trinity Psalter, Vol. 1 by Great Commission Publications is a wonderful recording of the Scottish Festival Singers from St. Cuthbert’s Church in Edinburgh singing many of the hymns we know and love at Church Creek.
Shout joyfully to the LORD, all you lands; worship the LORD with cries of gladness; come before him with joyful song. (Psalm 100:1)
