Sermon February 4, 2007

Hebrews 4.14 The Son of God

God loves us and wants us to do well at living the Christian life.

Therefore, since we have a great high priest who has passed through
the heavens,
Jesus the Son of God, let us hold fast our confession.

A. WHAT IS THIS CONFESSION?

1. The objective truth of Christianity

a. God is our Father Almighty, Maker of heaven and earth
b. Jesus Christ is God’s Son, our Lord
c. The Holy Spirit is the Creator of the church and the pledge
of our glory to come

2. Our personal adoption of the truth of Christianity

B. WHAT DOES IT MEAN TO HOLD FAST OUR CONFESSION?

1. Believe

a. Understand what God is saying
b. Agree that what God is saying is right
c. Rely upon what God says to guide in daily conduct

2. Keep on believing

a. “Let us hold fast” is an imperative: we MUST hold fast our
confession
b. It is imperative that we hold fast [2.1; 3.12; 12.25]

C. WHO IS TO HOLD FAST THIS CONFESSION?

1. Christians

2. All Christians

D. HOW CAN WE HOLD FAST OUR CONFESSION?

1. Think often of Jesus as our GREAT HIGH PRIEST

a. We have a PRIEST to stand in for us before God
b. He is a GREAT high priest
c. He has passed through the heavens into the very presence of
God

2. Think often of JESUS as our great high priest

a. The same Jesus who shares our human nature
b. The same Jesus who knows what we’re going through [4.15]

3. Think often of Jesus the SON OF GOD as our great high priest

4. Remember that we HAVE Jesus, the Son of God, as our great high
priest

a. He is ours through election [Eph 1.3-6]
b. He is ours through redemption [Eph 1.7-12]
c. He is ours through the work of the Holy Spirit [Eph 1.13-14]
