Sermon January 7, 2007

Hebrews 4.1-11 God’s Rest

God has an answer to all of our restlessness.

A. WHAT IS THIS REST?

1. God’s creation rest

The work of creation is God’s making all things…and all very
good.

2. The Promised Land of rest

I have come to deliver them…and to bring them…to a good and
spacious land,
to a land flowing with milk and honey.

3. The believer’s rest: peace with God

This is the rest which Jesus promises, the beginning of peace in
this
life through pardon and sonship,
the consummation to follow in glory.
This is what the Spirit says in Rev 14.13: they shall rest from
their labors [Richard Lenski].

Come to Me…and I will give you rest…and you will find rest
for
your souls.

B. HOW CAN WE ENTER THIS REST?

1. Do your best [1, 11]

Take your relationship with God seriously!

2. Do your best to hear God’s Word [2]

Paul’s attitude toward the Word: 2 Tim 1.13-14; 2.2, 8-9, 15;
3.14-17; 4.2, 13

3. Do your best to believe God’s Word [3]

a. Faith includes knowledge [Psalm 9.10]

b. Faith includes assent

c. Faith includes confidence

4. Do your best to live out God’s Word [6, 11]

Quotes of note...

The love I bear Christ is but a faint and feeble spark, but it is an emanation from himself: He kindled it and he keeps it alive; and because it is his work, I trust many waters shall not quench it.
