But if Christ is in you,
then even though your body is subject to death because of sin,
the Spirit gives life [or, your spirit is alive] because of righteousness.
[NIV 2011]

Paul’s argument in Romans 8: Blessed Assurance because we are in Christ

The presence of the SPIRIT of God [1-27]
The eternal PURPOSE of God [28-34]
The powerful LOVE of God [35-39]

Paul’s argument in Romans 8.9-11

You are in the Spirit [9]
Christ is in you and you ARE alive [10]
God WILL raise you up body and soul [11]

Paul’s firm belief in the Trinity

Paul’s message of assurance based on what God is doing in us

1. Our human nature includes the outer man and the inner man

                a. Outer man: physical body

                b. Inner man: spirit, soul, mind, heart, personality

2. There is a tension between the two

Though outwardly we are wasting away,
yet inwardly we are being renewed day by day. [2 Cor 4:16]

The spirit is willing, but the body is weak. [Matt 26.41]

3. The body IS death

                a. Because of Adam’s sin [Rom 5.12]

                b. outwardly we are wasting away

4. The spirit IS life

                a. Because of Christ’s righteousness [Rom 5.21]

                b. inwardly we are being renewed [Rom 6.11, 13, 20-23]

5. Christ is the One who makes all the difference

So what?

1. Assurance [Rom 8.38-39]

2. Obligation [Rom 8.12-13]

You, however, are not in the realm of the flesh
but are in the realm of the Spirit,
if indeed the Spirit of God lives in you.
And if anyone does not have the Spirit of Christ,
they do not belong to Christ.

A. THE SPIRIT OF GOD LIVES WITHIN THE CHRISTIAN

                1. What is NOT true of us: You are not in the realm of the flesh

                2. What IS true: You are in the realm of the Spirit

                3. What is REALLY true

                                a. What Paul says

                                                1 Corinthians 3.16; 6.19; Ephesians 2.19-22

                                b. What AW Pink says

                                                1) Intimacy

                                                2) Constancy

                                                3) Sovereignty

B. TANGIBLE EVIDENCE
THAT THE SPIRIT OF GOD LIVES WITHIN THE CHRISTIAN

                1. New life and freedom [2]

                2. A changed life [4]

                3. A new mind [5]

                4. Progress in holiness [13]

                5. A sense of belonging [15-16]

                6. Fortitude and hope in the face of adversity [18, 23-24]

                7. Persisting in prayer [26]

                8. Faith that God is in control [28]

C. WONDERFUL BENEFITS
WHEN THE SPIRIT OF GOD LIVES WITHIN THE CHRISTIAN

                1. He is the bond that connects us to God

                2. He is the distinguishing mark that we belong to God

                3. He is the promise that we will ALWAYS belong to God

                                2 Corinthians 1.21-22
Ephesians 1.13-14
Romans 8.16-17

                What’s wrong with people?

A. DESCRIPTION OF PEOPLE OUTSIDE OF CHRIST

                1. Flesh

                                “human nature as corrupted, directed,
and controlled by sin” [John Murray]

                 2. Mind

                                “It’s a question
of what preoccupies us,
of the ambitions which drive us
and the concerns which engross us,
of how we spend our time and our energies,
of what we concentrate on and give ourselves up to” [John Stott]

                3. Death

B. DOCTRINE OF ORIGINAL SIN

                1. Total Depravity

                                                Mark 7.21-23

                                                Ephesians 4.17-19

                2. Total Inability

                                                 John 3.3-7; 6.44; 15.4-5

                                                1 Corinthians 2.14

C. WHAT DIFFERENCE DOES ANY OF THIS MAKE FOR US?

                1. You

                2. The world

                3. Your loved ones
